Opening doors for people with disabilities isn’t just about providing jobs — it’s about including them in a world where their contributions matter. These opportunities help individuals who often face barriers to employment find purpose and belonging, while those who offer the chance witness a profound transformation.

The impact of these efforts is felt not only by the individuals gaining independence but also the associates who benefit from working alongside of them.

In 2024, ESFM established a national partnership with Best Buddies International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for integrated employment and leadership development for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Eurest & ESFM Senior Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Natacha Jacque recently hosted a conversation with Best Buddies International Director of National Partnerships Stephanie Rothey in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The talk, recorded as a podcast for ESFM and Eurest managers, centered on inclusion, breaking down common misconceptions about inclusive employment and sharing ways to foster meaningful job opportunities and enhance workplace inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

“Assuming competency is Number One when you’re working with this population. Assuming that people can do,” Rothey said. “There’s only one way to find out if someone can do something. I think exposing people to different tasks and roles, letting them job shadow, is something that’s often overlooked for this population.”

“The misconception of people thinking that people with disabilities are limited by their disability is totally untrue,” Markham said. “We have the unlimited ability to learn, grow and advance up the ladder of management in any company we choose.”

The important thing, he emphasized, is that people from all walks of life are treated fairly and with respect.”

“Having inclusive environments are necessary to having a great all around business,” Jacque said. “I’m thankful for the Compass commitment to people first and happy that Eurest and ESFM have been able to grow this partnership with Best Buddies.”
