Ask the Expert: Key Steps to Improving Energy Efficiency
The average commercial building in the U.S. wastes about 40% of its energy. ESFM Senior Director of Sustainability & Energy Solutions Gary Williams underscored this shocking statistic as he provided tips on sustainability and successful energy efficiency practices during FacilitiesNet Prime’s “Ask the Expert” series. The monthly forum allows FacilitiesNet Prime members to connect with subject matter experts and ask questions on critical topics concerning the facilities management industry.
Williams, a trained engineer, has more than 25 years experience in the energy efficiency field. Williams helps organizations deliver excellence by implementing effective sustainability and energy solutions, including through ESFM’s first-of-its-kind ENERGY STAR® partnership.
Energy efficiency is the first step toward achieving net-zero emissions and effective decarbonization, Williams explained during the session. Key strategies he shared include focusing on energy efficiency before investing heavily in renewable energy sources, like solar panels, undergoing ENERGY STAR benchmarking, and prioritizing projects based on factors such as payback period, sustainability goals and environmental considerations.
